GDP sees record plunge due to Covid pandemic

The sharp contraction in GDP numbers is mainly due to closure of business activity during the quarter owing to Covid-19 lockdowns. The GDP figure stood at 3.1% in the Jan-March period 2019-20.

80:20 scheme: Maharashtra eases control on Mumbai's non-Covid beds, fixes PPE cost
Maharashtra’s public health department on Monday issued an order extending the 80:20 scheme, by which state and local corporations will continue to control 80% beds and treatment charges in private hospitals till November-end. Mumbai’s private hospitals have been granted some relaxation whereby government control over non-Covid beds has been reduced from 80% to 50%. The authorities would continue to regulate admissions to 80% of Covid beds in these hospitals.

Mumbai: At 1,248mm, rainfall this August is just a few mm short of 1958 record
With 7.6 mm rain up to 8.30 pm on the last day of the month, the city recorded its highest August rainfall in 62 years. The India Meteorological Department’s Santacruz observatory, representative of the city, recorded a total of 1,248 mm rainfall in the month, only 6.3 mm short of the all-time high of 1,254 mm in 1958. Last August the rain record was 586 mm On Monday, between 8.30am and 8.30pm, Santacruz and Colaba recorded 7.6 mm and 4.6 mm rain rainfall respectively.

Drop in cases and deaths in Maharashtra as daily tests reduced
The state recorded a significant drop in cases and deaths after two consecutive days of registering 16,000-plus cases. On Monday, Maharashtra added 11,852 new Covid-19 cases, taking its tally to 7,92,541 and closer to the 8 lakh mark. It also recorded 184 deaths, its lowest toll in 41 days. The state’s total Covid-19 toll now stands at 24,583.
